YUANYUAN TANG: Self in Others — solo exhibition by YUANYUAN TANG at L Gallery, Hangzhou, 1 May – 14 May 2026.

This exhibition examines the psychic condition of contemporary life, tracing the diffuse anxieties, agitation, and emotional unease that permeate the social landscape. The body serves as the artist’s primary site of expression—the most direct register of affect and experience.

Within the paintings, bodies frequently depart from the logic of anatomical representation, assuming forms that convey psychological rather than physical truths. Painting is conceived here as a mode of thinking, one whose expressive possibilities draw closer to literature and poetry than to descriptive depiction.

In dialogue with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s understanding of the body as an expressive being, and with Heidegger’s notion of Dasein, these works reject the certainties of Cartesian rationality in favor of ambiguity, sensorial resonance, and poetic indeterminacy. Through flowing layers of color and figures marked by tension and transformation, invisible emotional states acquire a visible presence, unfolding on the canvas with a powerful sense of drama and revelation.
