He Wang: Circus of Survival — solo exhibition by HE WANG at L Gallery, Hangzhou, 16 Apr – 30 Apr 2026.
Objects in Wang He’s paintings seem perpetually caught within a carnival-like commotion. Their boundaries hover between clarity and dissolution; colors rarely settle into stable fields; forms are continuously pulled apart, rewritten, and reversed by brushwork and texture. As a result, these images appear to emerge from reality even as they seem on the verge of receding from it, as though they were undergoing an unspoken process of rise and descent within the pictorial space itself.
If Wang He’s paintings respond to anything, they respond to the ways in which a person is shaped by reality—and to the recurring self-doubt that accompanies that shaping. Pressure, expectation, anxiety, exhaustion, and the persistent influence of external judgment together form an inescapable backdrop to the artist’s practice. Painting here is not an attempt to romanticize suffering, but rather a form of record-keeping imbued with self-examination and reflection.
