Tang Yuanyuan, born in Hengyang, Hunan Province in 1996, graduated from the Figurative Studio of the Sculpture Department, China Academy of Art in 2019. She now lives and creates in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province.
Tang Yuanyuan’s creations focus on the spiritual symptoms of contemporary society, aiming to capture the pervasive, restless anxiety and suffering that linger everywhere.
The artist regards the human body as the most direct carrier of emotions. On the canvas, the body often breaks away from realistic anatomical structures, transforming into gestures shaped by psychological truth. In line with Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical idea of “the expressive body”, as well as Heidegger’s concept of Dasein, her work moves away from Cartesian rationality, conjuring ambiguous colours and poetic mystery. Through flowing, overlapping colours and tense bodily traces, invisible emotions gain visible form and dramatic manifestation.
Her painting practice offers a new mode of expression, one that draws close to the language of literature and even poetry.
