Kailun Luo

Luo Kailun (b. 2001, Shenzhen, Guangdong) currently lives and works in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. She received her BFA in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art in 2023 and her MFA in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art in 2026.

Luo Kailun's painting can be understood as a kind of undertone presence—one that does not rush to narrate life into a story, but instead chooses to confirm the subject's continued presence from the smallest displacements within everyday experience. Those moments scarcely worth narrating—the guidance of light, the brief encounter of a gaze, the lingering aftermath of emotion slowly settling over time—are granted a serious place here. Rather than depicting intimate space, this is an examination of how intimate space can become an apparatus of perception, allowing people to rediscover that the weight of lived experience often does not come from the scale of events, but from the unignorable lag between event and emotion. Thus, her creative method, with color as catalyst, becomes especially crucial: beginning with random applications of color, letting color first occupy the canvas, and then allowing traces and overlays to draw forth the return of memory. The image is not an object to be represented, but a clue that triggers recollection; painting is not an illustration of life, but the a priori condition through which life "occurs" anew on a psychological level.
