XINYUAN NAN

My work is about how "loss" transforms into a "gift."

I use mineral pigments because they demand layer upon layer of buildup, only to be scraped away so the colors and textures beneath can emerge. This process itself mirrors how memory works: covering, sealing away, then constantly resurfacing.

What I do on the canvas is turn what has faded into something that grows again. Drawing energy from memory is hard without brushing against some sorrow, but I am not documenting sadness. I am leaving traces in matter, allowing those who have left and the time that has passed to gain another life within the painting.
